If you've published a scholarly article, you may have received an email with the subject line: An AI Podcast Has Been Created for Your Paper "..." that looks like this:
There are a few things we suggest authors keep in mind.
- Don't panic, but do take action.
- Take a moment to decide whether having an AI summary or podcast version of a specific piece of your work is the best way to share your research. Maybe your research is well-represented in a conversational style, which can be beneficial to novice researchers. However, this is not necessarily the case for all disciplines.
- Consider the license under which you have published your work. Your publisher may have restrictions that consider AI generated output to be derivative content.
- As of right now, you are opting in or out at the account level, so the decision you make for one work will apply to anything you have uploaded to Academia.edu.
- It's unclear as to whether Academia.edu is contacting all authors on a paper, the first author, or a random author. Check with any coauthors to see how you would like to proceed. People without Academia.edu accounts are not being contacted.
If you do want a podcast or AI summary created- you've already been automatically opted-in for this paper.
If you do not want this created for your work, you need to opt out. You can either do it from the change AI settings link in the email, or you can follow the instructions linked here. Go to your account settings, then go to AI settings, and toggle AI outputs off.
The library team supports making research accessible to more users in an ethical manner. However, we also want authors to make informed decisions about how their work is being shared.
As always, reach out to the library team if you have any questions!
