In memory of Professor Emeritus Gregg Lee Carter, we at the Krupp Library have organized a display of his many publications.
Carter was a beloved professor of sociology in the Department of Politics, Law, and Society. His storied career at Bryant University began in 1983 and concluded with his retirement after 40 years in 2023. He served as Chair of the Department of History and Social Sciences from 2003 to 2015, won Bryant’s Top Faculty Scholarship Award in 1998 and Distinguished Faculty Award in 2018, and sat on many university committees of note. Through his work, he touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff.
Carter’s praises are not sung only by the Bryant community, though; his work as a sociologist, especially in the area of gun control, is lauded. He has been honored with the New England Sociological Association's Sociologist of the Year Award and the American Sociological Association's Outstanding Contributions to Instruction Award, and previously served as the President of the New England Sociological Association. Over the course of his career, Carter authored or edited 25 books and many articles, and was frequently interviewed for his expertise.
Outside of work, Carter and his wife Lisa dedicated themselves to advancing social reform in Rhode Island, including advocating for the state’s unhoused people. They enjoyed gardening, hiking, and spending time with their family together. Carter was also a certified Master Scuba Diver; he enjoyed scuba diving and underwater photography. A selection of his photography, as well as his personal biography and information about his books and media appearances, can be found on his website.
Our heart goes out to Professor Carter’s family, friends, and loved ones. He will be missed at Bryant, though his legacy lives on in his incredible work.
