June 21st, 2024

Globe surrounded by instruments and text "World Music Month"

Our World Music Month blog post recognizes the annual event Fête de la Musique, also known as International Music Day or World Music Day. Here, we highlight its history, explore our current exhibit, and upcoming Rhode Island-based music events.

History of World Music Day

It came into fruition in France in 1982 by the Ministrere de la Culture (Ministry of Culture), Jack Lang, and composer Maurice Fleuret. The vision was to dedicate a day to free and live music, allowing musicians of all backgrounds to perform amongst diverse communities. Today, World Music Day is embraced by several countries across many cultures, exposing the versatility and craftsmanship of musicians everywhere.
