If you’re a fan of using EBSCO databases through the library, you may have noticed that they look different recently. EBSCO has done a major update with a new look and increased accessibility options. The databases will provide the same sources and functionality you’re familiar with, but some things have moved and there are new features to be acquainted with.
IMPROVED SEARCH OPTIONS AND FILTERS
The main search boxes are still available and it should be easier to limit to peer reviewed resources or by date range.
When using additional filters after the initial search, they’re now under the search bar and filters will be “sticky” and stay in place through multiple searches.
TOOLS FOR EASIER ACCESS
Similarly, the tools for individual articles - such as creating a citation or emailing the record – are now at the top of the page instead of off to the side.
TEXT-TO-SPEECH AND TRANSLATION FEATURES
If an article is available in EBSCO, instead of linking to it elsewhere, it will have a text-to-speech option so that you can listen to the article you need while doing other things. If the article is available as online full text, and not just a PDF, they may even be able to be translated to other languages.
URLs AND PERMALINK ADD-ONS
In addition, urls at the top of the page should be stable. While it’s still best practice to find a permalink or stable url if one is available (now found under “share” in EBSCO), this means that bookmarking pages should be easier and you don’t need to worry about losing an article if you keep it open in your browser for too long. If you saved a permalink for an article in the past, that link should still work in this new update.
We encourage you to play around in one of the updated databases and learn the new features yourself.
